Reviews
So much more could have been included in this thin book (35 pages) with very little effort. These are traditional folk songs from around the Spanish speaking world - Mexico, Puerto Rico, Catalonia, Chile, and even a Sephardic Folk song. However, no lyrics for the songs are provided in either Spanish or English; no country of origin is noted for any of the songs; and no information about the background of the songs is included. For instance, a musician wishing to learn "Corrido de los oprimidos" (Ballad of the Oppressed) might be interested to learn that the stanzas of the song reflect the perspective of Mexican Indians on racial prejudice in 1821. I know that this was not meant to be a history book, but when learning traditional folk music it's nice to have some background so each song can be put into its historical context. It's too bad that Mark Phillips didn't put a little more effort into this apparently self-published book. It would have been much more useful and compelling.
